We All Have the Power to Help Inspire Future Generations

About Us

Maths holds a place of fear for many African children, proportionally amplified by economic inequality. The Ubuntu Maths Institute (UMI), incubated in the LEAP Institute during the COVID -19 period, represents a call to action to reshape mathematics teaching and learning in Africa by incorporating the values of Ubuntu as the foundational value system.

UMI asserts that mathematics education in Africa will thrive if committed to the shared humanly interdependent values of Ubuntu (the recognition that humans are bound together and need to protect the values of communality, sharing and acceptance in order to foster coexistence on earth).

We owe it to our children and future generations to free ourselves from this fixed mindset and liberate ourselves and all children to discover the genius within!

Our Objectives

The Ubuntu Maths Institute aims to:

By removing outdated modes of instruction, UMI celebrates the competencies needed by 21st-century citizens. UMI has a vision for public engagement that will take mathematics, which is regarded as the key ‘gateway’ subject, to all in every community hub, encouraging everyone to re-examine their relationship with maths.

  • Shift the paradigm in which most African children are excluded from being enabled to learn and love mathematics as an integrated part of living and learning.
  • Close the divide in mathematics education in Africa and make quality and meaningfully integrated mathematics learning and exploration accessible to all.
  • Transform instructional practice to be driven by values underpinning the value of learning: ensuring the child is always at the centre of the learning focus; developing empowering competencies; enabling deep learning through experience; and developing character to develop global citizens empowered as agents of change in their own communities, countries, and ecosystems.

Projects/ Workshops

Our interactive training workshops have 3 main goals:

1.

Inspire teachers to facilitate and enable experiential, discovery  learning for all children.

2.

Unlock the magic and joy of growth mindset.

3.

Enable the values of Ubuntu Maths to underpin the value of Maths for all our children.
